Welcome to Brecon and District Male Voice Choir

Croeso i Gôr Meibion Aberhonddu a’r Cylch

Known as CÔR MEIBION ABERHONDDU or even Brecon Male Voice Choir, we are a small choir of some 40 voices drawn from the rolling hills and valleys in the heart of the Brecon Beacons. We are the Voices of the Beacons.

Formed in 1937, the choir has performed in a range of venues in front of audiences across the world – from local chapels to the Royal Albert Hall, Denmark to the USA.

The hills are alive with the Sound of Music’ and in the heart of the Brecon Beacons Côr Meibion Aberhonddu strives to keep it alive. The tradition of male voice singing is at the heart of Welsh culture which we are keen to protect and promote. To the members it is an enjoyable and challenging experience, which only a few get the opportunity to experience in their lives. So, we encourage you to come and see for yourself! Singing is not only to entertain but it makes you feel good.

We sing a wide range of music from West End pieces to famous operettas and not forgetting the traditional Welsh hymns. Even though the choir’s repertoire includes many pieces sung in Welsh, fluent Welsh speakers make up a small minority of our members. Although this may sound daunting to English speakers, our Musical Director gives great encouragement and assistance with the pronunciation.

We sing frequently at concerts and events organised by local charities to assist with their fundraising. We recently estimated that we helped to raise about £10,000 per year for charities and local churches. From time to time our members raise funds to support other charities directly. In recent years these have included Wales Air Ambulance, Dial a Ride (Brecon) and the Lymphoma Association.  Also we sing at many weddings not just in the Brecon area but all across the UK.

Our social diary is also busy, and trips enable us to combine our social and charitable activities by giving others a taste of our culture. In 2017 we attended a Choir Festival in Ribe (Denmark) and are already making plans for further trips both in the UK and on the continent. We enjoy a social evening, whether it’s for a member’s birthday, the “afterglow” following a concert or simply for the fun of it at a local pub.

Above all, we are a family. If times are tough, our members are here for each other, quick to help if needed and always concerned for each other’s
well-being. We are supported by the Friends of the Choir (“the Ladies”) who raise funds and are absolutely pivotal to arranging (and financing) social events.

Explore our website and learn more about our history and future events or you can join us to sing or listen on Thursday nights at Brynich Barn. You will be made very welcome.
